Born in Telecoms
Founded as a telecommunications operator in South Africa, Calmex built its foundations on licensed network infrastructure and technical expertise.
We secured our ICASA licence, establishing ourselves as a fully regulated internet service provider.
Membership with AFRINIC and ISPA followed, cementing our position within the continental and national internet governance ecosystem.
Our Autonomous System Number (ASN) ownership marked a significant technical milestone — giving Calmex direct control over its own routing infrastructure.
Expanding Into Fintech
Recognising the critical gap between connectivity and commerce, Calmex expanded into the payments ecosystem. We built proprietary Automated Fare Collection systems for public transport operators, bridging the physical and digital payments worlds.
Our merchant acquiring capability, parking payment systems and payment gateway infrastructure extended our reach into everyday commercial transactions. Today, Calmex processes millions of transactions across transport, retail and municipal services — fully compliant with PASA standards.
Reimagining Mobility
The logical extension of payments in motion was full mobility management. Calmex launched e-Driver, our driver management and compliance platform, alongside fleet telematics and route optimisation tools.
Real-time visibility across transport networks — from vehicle tracking to route performance — gave operators unprecedented control over their operations. Our mobility platform now serves municipal transport operators, private fleet managers and public-sector clients across multiple provinces.
One Connected Ecosystem
The Calmex of today is the result of deliberate integration. Three previously separate domains — connectivity, payments and mobility — now operate as one unified platform.
This integration creates compounding value for our clients: a transport operator using our AFC system can also access our ISP services and fleet management tools through a single infrastructure relationship.
