Modernising Johannesburg's Bus Rapid Transit Fare System
Calmex partnered with the Rea Vaya BRT system to deliver a full Automated Fare Collection modernisation — introducing open-loop payments, account-based ticketing and real-time transaction reconciliation across the Johannesburg network.
The Challenge
Rea Vaya's legacy fare collection system relied on closed-loop smart cards, limiting payment flexibility and creating significant cash handling and reconciliation overhead. The operator needed a modern, open-loop AFC architecture that could accept contactless bank cards and mobile payments while maintaining existing validator infrastructure investments and full back-office audit capability.

The Solution
Calmex deployed a hybrid AFC modernisation — upgrading validators to support open-loop contactless acceptance alongside the existing smart card infrastructure. An Account Based Ticketing (ABT) engine replaced back-office closed-loop processing, enabling real-time transaction routing, automatic best-fare calculation and daily/weekly fare capping.

Strategic Value
The Rea Vaya modernisation validated Calmex's end-to-end AFC capability — from validator hardware through to back-office ABT processing. This project established the technical blueprint for future open-loop deployments across South Africa's municipal BRT and bus networks, and underpins the transport payment layer of the Calmex Super App.
